AI & Discovery - a sample prompt sheet for ChatGPT
posted 19th November 2024
AI is a great resource when you want to gather information and get up to speed quickly on a new topic.
In this post you will get some ideas on how to use prompts so you can learn quickly about a topic:
• Set context - be clear on what you need
• Broad prompts
• Refined prompts
• Define trusted sources
• Create a trigger prompt for ongoing use
This type of research should not replace in-depth contextual inquiry, but rather help kick-start the process and inform investigations and discovery work.
Set the context - tell GPT who you are and what you need
I am a Human-centred Researcher and Service Designer and I want to learn more about healthcare and how digital innovation and service design can alleviate pain points for service suppliers and users. I want you to act as a thought leader in healthcare innovation so I can learn from you. I am interested in understanding the different types of health services available e.g. primary, secondary, specialist and get an understanding of the challenges faced by service providers, users of the services and stakeholders such as their families.
As I am not a Medic or Subject Matter Expert, I want you to explain healthcare services and challenges in simple, easy to follow terms. Break explanations down into functional areas such as primary healthcare, acute healthcare etc. and categorise themes under clear headings so I can digest the information easily.
Start broad - identify key themes
Tell me the main themes I need to explore to get an understanding of healthcare in the UK. I want no more than 8 themes. As a start I'm interested in understanding (1) main healthcare challenges by demographics, (2) healthcare policies, (3) short and long term plans for the NHS, (4) using data and technology to innovate.
Confirm if these are relevant themes. Give me additional themes to consider.
Use more specific prompts to probe key themes
Give me relevant trustworthy sources on the following themes.
• Healthcare challenges in UK - regional vs demographic
• The healthiest and least healthiest people / segments in the UK - and drivers
• The healthiest and least healthiest places to live in the UK - and divers
• Top 5 prevalent Long-term conditions - and how this breakdown across gender, ethic groups, socio-economic groups
• Innovation - including AI, machine learning, MedTech, etc.
• Healthcare policies
• Healthcare plans - short, medium and long-term
• Accessibility and inclusion
For each theme give a short fact-based summary of the key points of no more than 500 words. I want a list of no more than 20 sources of information dated no earlier than 2020.
Attribute each information item to the source:
• Name of publication
• Name of author
• Date of publication
• Include relevant ULR or video links on content
• Include short bio of Author where available to help inform credibility. Where a bio is not available state unavailable
Give a confidence rating for each item: Low, Medium or High
Refine prompts again - understand different users groups
I want to understand challenges across different user groups. Give me relevant trustworthy sources on the following themes.
• General public - staying healthy
• Users or patients - acute temporary healthcare needs
• People living with long-term conditions, well managed
• People living with long-term conditions, complications and difficult to manage
• People who are very ill - need of full-time care
As above, give me a fact-based summary of up to 500 words for each user group. I want a list of no more than 20 sources of information dated no earlier than 2020. Attribute each source by name of publication, date of publication, authors and level of confidence.
Create a personalised search for ongoing use
When you are confident you have reliable sources that's giving you the content you need, create a trigger prompt so you can automatically generate the results again for ongoing updates.
Prompt:
Give me concise factual updates of up to 500 words on each of the following healthcare topics when triggered with keyword Healthcare Trends & Innovation Update.
The update covers specific topics:
• Healthcare challenges in UK - and the drivers?
• The healthiest and least healthiest places in the UK - and the drivers?
• The healthiest and least healthiest people (by demographics) in the UK - and the drivers?
• Health innovation including MedTech and how innovators are using AI
• Health Policies in UK, including regulation
• Accessibility & inclusion
• What we can learn from the healthiest countries in Europe and the world as a whole
In each update sources to be included, but not limited to:
https://www.england.nhs.uk/
https://www.who.int/
https://www.commonwealthfund.org/
https://www.bma.org.uk/
https://www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/
https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/
[add to list of preferred sources as appropriate]
Attribute each source with publication name, author, date of publication and relevant links to urls and videos
Now you have an update on healthcare and innovation with a single trigger prompt from sources you can trust.
Tip 1: Review results regularly to make sure results are pulled from a broad enough spectrum of credible sources. Refine and update the search prompt associated with the prompt trigger as needed.
Tip 2: Make sure themes are not too broad or too narrow. As your knowledge progresses you may need to do a deeper dive on specific areas. Create another search and prompt trigger as needed.
Tip 3: Don't be afraid to experiment and have fun!
**As I said above, this exercise should not replace contextual inquiry and discovery overall. To produce human-centred services that add meaningful value you still need to understand users and their problems in the context of their world, define the problems you want to work on and quantify opportunities. This is the start of your learning journey, not the end.**
